Accessibility
We want this site to be usable by everyone, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard alone,
magnification, or a browser with a forced colour scheme. This page says what we have done, what we know
is imperfect, and how to tell us when we get it wrong.
What we aim for
We target the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA as our working standard.
That is a target we hold ourselves to rather than a certification we have bought.
What we have done
- Contrast. Body text is near-black on a light ground. Our accent colour is used at a
measured contrast ratio of 6.5:1 against white, which passes AA for normal-size text as well as for
large text and for interface components. - Keyboard. Every link, button, form field and the catalogue filter can be reached and
operated with a keyboard alone. Focus is shown with a visible two-pixel outline that is never removed. A
skip-to-content link is the first thing in the tab order. - Structure. Each page has one h1 and a properly nested heading order, so a screen
reader’s heading list is a usable table of contents. Landmarks mark the header, navigation, main content
and footer. - Images. Product photographs carry descriptive alternative text. The house diagram on
the home page carries a text description of what it shows, and every item it labels is also available as
plain text in the list beside it. - Motion. The diagram animates as you scroll. If your system is set to reduce motion,
it does not animate at all — it draws itself complete immediately, with nothing lost. - Tables. Specification and standards tables use real table markup with header cells,
so a screen reader announces which value belongs to which label. - Zoom and reflow. The site reflows to a single column and stays usable at 200% zoom
and at a 390-pixel viewport, with no horizontal scrolling. - No traps. No content flashes, no dialogue opens without being dismissible by
keyboard, no form has a time limit.
Where we know we fall short
Some of the checkout is rendered by our commerce platform rather than by us. We have restyled it for
contrast and focus visibility, but its markup is not entirely under our control and a few of its error
messages are announced later than they should be. If you hit that, email us and we will take the order
by email instead — that route is always open and it is not a lesser service.
Our specification tables are wide. On a narrow screen they scroll horizontally inside their own
container rather than reflowing, because breaking a specification apart makes it harder to read, not
easier. We are still looking for a better answer.
Tell us
If any part of this site is difficult or impossible for you to use, write to
support@guardianway.store and say what happened and what you were using. We treat
that as a defect report, not a complaint, and we will tell you what we are going to do and when. If you
cannot use the site to order, we will take the order by email and apply the same prices and shipping.
