In detail

Almost every forced entry through a hinged door fails at the same place: the strike plate, held by two three-quarter-inch screws into soft jamb pine. The lock is rarely the weak part. This kit replaces the strike with a 16-gauge plate and four three-inch screws that reach past the jamb into the structural stud behind it.

Fits standard residential prep. Ten minutes with a screwdriver, and it does more for the door than a lock upgrade twice its price.

Fitting and care. Take the old strike off and look at the hole before you order anything else — if the jamb is already split, glue and clamp it and let it dry overnight before fitting this. Drill pilot holes for the three-inch screws or you will split the jamb doing the repair. The screws must reach the stud behind the jamb, so check the shim gap first; where the gap is more than half an inch, pack it with a hardwood shim rather than letting the screw bridge an air space. Fifteen minutes a door, and it is worth doing on every exterior door at the same time.
