Garages hold fuel, solvent, paint, batteries and a car, and they are usually attached to the house. A 2.5 lb kitchen unit discharges in about nine seconds; five pounds gives roughly twice that and a 40-B rating covers a substantially larger flammable-liquid fire.

Fitting and care. Mount it by the door back into the house, at a height a person can lift from cleanly, and never behind where a car parks. Check the gauge monthly and log it on the tag. Invert and shake twice a year. Garages get cold and hot, both of which are within the operating range, but condensation is not: wipe the cylinder if it sweats, and check the base for corrosion once a year, because a garage floor is the commonest place an extinguisher rusts through at the foot ring.
