Hinge security pin set

A door that opens outward has its hinge knuckles on the outside, and a hinge pin can be tapped out with a nail and a hammer in about fifteen seconds. Security pins solve it: a hardened stud is set into one leaf and seats into a matching hole in the other, so even with every pin removed the door cannot be pulled away from the frame.

Four pins, enough for two three-hinge doors. Fits standard residential butt hinges; installs with a drill bit that is included. There is no published standard for these and we are not going to invent one — they are a mechanical interlock and they either engage or they do not.

Fitting and care. Only needed on doors that open outward — check which way yours swings before ordering, because an inward-opening door has its knuckles inside and does not need these. Fit one pin per hinge on the top and bottom hinge as a minimum. Drill the receiving hole with the door closed and the bit run through the pilot in the fitted leaf, so the two line up under load rather than only when the door is hanging free. If the door binds afterwards the holes are out of alignment; open them a little rather than forcing the door.
