A cabin lockbox for a car boot, a hotel room, a boat or a locker: 16-gauge steel, a four-digit mechanical dial that needs no battery, foam lining, and a four-foot braided cable to tether it to something fixed.
It carries no UL rating for fire or burglary and we are not going to imply one. What it does is stop an opportunist walking off with a wallet, keys, papers or a passport, and it does that well. For anything that needs a rating, use the chest on plate 22 or the safe on plate 31.
Fitting and care. Tether it to something structural — a seat frame, a fixed rail, a bolted fitting — not to a handle or a soft loop that can be cut in a second. Set the combination before first use and do not use a date anybody can find. The dial needs no battery, which is the point, but it does need to be spun clear after closing or the last digits stay set. Keep it out of sight rather than relying on the cable; concealment does more work here than the steel does.
