A between-studs wall safe fits a standard 16-inch bay and sits flush behind a picture or inside a closet. Its protection is concealment and a 14-gauge door with live-locking bolts — it carries no UL fire or burglary rating and we are not going to imply one. For documents that need a rating, use the Class 350 chest on plate 22.
What it is genuinely good for: passports, spare keys, small valuables and cash you want out of sight and out of a casual search. Electronic keypad with key override and a silent-entry mode.
Fitting and care. Find the studs and check for wiring and pipes before cutting; a stud finder with an AC detector is the minimum and a bore scope is better. Fit it in a closet or behind something that is not the obvious picture over the desk. Do not put the only copy of anything in it — it has no fire rating, and a house fire will take the contents. Change the code on installation and keep the override key elsewhere. Check the battery yearly; a keypad that fails with the door shut is an expensive afternoon.
